Ed Boon Explains How Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalities Are Made

PlayStation Access interviews Ed Boon about how they make a Mortal Kombat 1 fatality and the origins of the incredible new Kameo system.

We played Mortal Kombat 1 at Summer Game Fest and talked to legendary Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon about the latest edition to the series. We quiz him about how they cook up Mortal Kombat 1’s fatalities, how MK1 is pitched at newcomers and experienced players alike and how the new Kameo system came about. We also try to get Ed to reveal his favourite Kameo fighter - no spoilers, but he does give us a clue.

Our Ed Boon interview also goes into fatalities - how they are made and, crucially, how they decide what does and doesn’t make the cut. The secret to a great fatality? Make ‘em laugh, apparently. Our resident horror fanatic Ash also quizzes Ed about how horror films have influenced Mortal Kombat’s iconic finishers.

We also go into the Mortal Kombat 1 story, explaining how Liu Kang became the main face of the game and how the team has used this to create the perfect introduction to new players. Ed Boon also tells us how the story shapes the character choices for the game and how the Kameo fighters let them get even more characters into the roster.
