Blades of Fire Preview: God of War Meets Dark Souls

Blades of Fire has been secretly in the works for years as a fresh IP from the studio behind Metroid Dread, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and, er, Scrapland. And though soulslike fans will find a lot to enjoy here, it's not quite like anything you've ever played before, with unique controls designed around directional attacks and a clever forge-based levelling system where your weapons are tailored to specific enemy types.

It's definitely an action RPG for thinkers, requiring you to engage with its deep systems and also be generally good at its unforgiving combat. And with its compelling, mythology driven story and a young companion showing up for sidekick duty, the God of War comparisons are inevitable. But is it perhaps too clever for its own good? Either way, you'll be to decide for yourself soon as the Blades of Fire release date is May 22, 2025 for PC, PS5 (PlayStation 5), and Xbox Series X/S.
